When the Great Migration began, Negroes started to migrate to Northern Cities to better their lives and existence. Some say this started as early as 1910 while others say around 1915. Either way, it marked a period of great growth in large and small cities up north, cities like New York, Philadelphia, Newark, Chicago, Detroit, and Milwaukee. They were looking for a promise land and a better way of life for their families. Even in the worst of times of racial discrimination, some African Americans overcame the system to obtain an education and to prosper. Against all odds a man will kick off his shackles against his oppressors to make life better for himself and his family. He will prosper for the sake of it because his life depends on it. In reality, he must do so, for him and his family and his race. It is necessary for the survival of his race.
