Cymbeline: The Fiery Giver of Life

Deborah O'Keeffe's avatar Deborah O'Keeffe

Triptych. Mosaic collage on wood. Overall dimensions 80" high x 72" wide (center panel 80" high x 36" wide; left and right panels each 80" high x 18" wide). Finely detailed mosaic collage consisting of thousands of bits of handcut paper glued to prepared substrate in mandala form, finished with 7 coats polyurethane. ---- Mandalas, often employed in meditation practice, establish through art a sacred space or spiritual cosmos. The mandala, usually circular, is an ancient, metaphysically significant form found in Hindu, Buddhist, and Judaeo-Christian traditions. Rooted in nature and the human psyche the mandala signifies, among other things, completion and fulfillment. One may find at the form's center a circle, cross, square, diamond, representation of a deity, or other symbol. Carl Jung, who viewed the mandala as a representation of the unconscious self, noted that some of his patients reported mandala dreams as they neared the completion of their therapeutic goals.
