METROPOLIS

METROPOLIS all began with the idea of creating my ideal city. I love architecture and it's inspiration, and I knew that I wanted my piece to somehow represent buildings as well as structures. I thought about what my ideal city would look like, and I soon realized that it would consist of structures completely in tune with and surrounded by nature. My connection to nature is carefully detailed in my choice of materials. I incorporated exotic wengee wood from the rainforest as well as creeping moss into this piece. I also tried to use colors that could easily be found in nature. To represent the city, METROPOLIS consists of hundreds of carefully cut angles such as those seen in rooflines, as well as glass to represent windows. The modern black lines represent roadways or highways as well as buttresses used on buildings. I love shaping glass and wood into something I call 'sculptural mosaics.' The song "Metropolis" by Owl City was the main inspiration for me as I was moved by the lyrics, "I left my heart in Metropolis." After listening to that song I knew I wanted to create a visual as to what my metropolis city looked like to me. I started conceptualizing the idea of METROPOLIS at just 19 years old, and 5 months later, I am satisfied to have brought that idea to life.
