Ursa Major (Strong Like Bear)

Ursa Major—The Great Bear—a figurative representation of the bear totem. The bear symbolizes strength, confidence and is a powerful symbol for motherhood; one may be familiar with the tenacity of a mother bear as she protects and nurtures her young. This drawing is deeply personal to me in my own journey into motherhood. I had scheduled my model for a photoshoot in early January of 2015. The day I met with her turned out to also be the day I found out that I was pregnant; a blessing after years of infertility. I came to identify the spirit of this drawing with my daughter, and sure enough, she was born with a commanding personality. We often refer to her as "Strong Like Bear" as she exhibits both physical strength and true strength of character. She is fearless, determined, and adventurous. This drawing represents us both—our relationship as mother and daughter—and the fierce bond between us. Created with graphite pencils and brushed graphite powder on paper.
