First Date

Robert Shangle’s living statue performance art often evokes strong feelings - of surprise, of anticipation, of nervousness, of delight. For ArtPrize 2016, he explores the ways those same feelings are experienced in another setting – the first date. When two people meet with the possibility of a future relationship for the first time, many emotions are in play. Their confidence may rise above their shyness, or nervousness might freeze them. What is the other thinking? Are they being real? Should I do something? Who will make a move? Robert’s new presentation, “First Date”, is a sculpture in the style of an oil painting (an oil painting in three dimensions). He created a life-like statue of a mysterious lady. He presents a tableau where he sits on a park bench with this lady of intrigue to portray the scene of a “first date”. The excitement and awkwardness experienced on a first date are captured in the statues. The living statue will sometimes “make a move” to interact with his lady and the spectators. Robert’s distinctive style of combining 3D oil painting, an actual statue, and his talent as a living statue make him one of the most sought after living statue artists. Since Robert himself is an element of the art, he has the parallel task of keeping his mind, body and spirit in a creative, focused state to meld in with the 3D oil painting setting. “It has been quite an evolution, and I am not content to stand still with my art.” - Robert Shangle
