Kittywampus

Kittywampus One day at work, I was explaining a technical aspect of framing to my associates. I used the word kittywampus. The girls laughed. She’s making up words again, they giggled. My boss called me crazy. So I “googled” it. Kittywampus is the slang form for catawampus. Catawampus (1830-40) [kat-uh-wom-puh s] adj: 1. askew; awry. 2. positioned diagonally; cater-cornered. adv: 3. diagonally; obliquely. It appears as a noun (1843) as a name for an imaginary fierce beast or hobgoblin. Most likely from the catamount, a wild animal from the cat family such as the lynx, puma or cougar. I started thinking about how cats are a little askew, off-balanced. How they think of themselves as fierce creatures. Then I realized that I am also askew, off-balanced at times and a bit fierce when needed. My entry grew from that small conversation at work when I proved that I was not crazy. My co-workers did not believe me but they did believe Google.
