Better Than Me

Growing up in 70's Detroit and learning from the radio jocks was all it took for Mary to pick up the guitar. The recipient of multiple Detroit Music Awards and decades of performing across the planet has led her to release this new album of songs, which features the track Better Than Me written by Mary McGuire & Erik Gustafson The inspiration for the song Better Than Me came on the turnpike from Boston to Hartford. Mary was listening to Fresh Air with Terri Gross about a high ranking woman who left the military after the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” went into effect. Upon arriving at her gig, a particularly aggressive man started in on her about being a musician and how unlikely a career choice it was for a woman. She shares “He was so angry that it was unsettling.” The inspiration hit and the lyrics were written immediately. The song covers the themes of bullying and how to overcome it by standing up for yourself. Performances are posted here: www.facebook.com/marymcguiremusic
