Scat Man

The voice of the jazz singer can be the most captivating of all musical sounds. At times the singer is rhythmicaly following lyrics and at other times simply using syllables emotively, otherwise known as Scat. Once this individual picked up the microphone and began to express his interpretation of the music, the murmurs from the audience fell to silence as they held close to every vocal improvisational utterance he bellowed out to them. Moving easily between lyrics and scat, this gentleman helped the crowd experience, first hand, this very American music. My attempt to pay homage to him and that powerful art form is characterized in my colored pencil painting. For anyone viewing this piece, my desire was to capture an image that could depict the love and energy he radiated throughout his set while respecting this supremely expressive musical art form from the African American community of the 19th and early 20th centuries. I hope I did well by him and the music.
