Map of the Dance

This very large canvas (10'4 x 4'6) was completed over the course of several years, and in very different locations. The first movements were begun in Costa Rica during my last year of living there, added to during a brief stay in the American Southwest, and, finally, completed in my place of origin in Michigan where I have finally returned. The painting is an expression of the dynamic movement of energy within me, and the impact that different places and my wandering nature have had upon that energy. Sometimes I look at it and am reminded of the sensuality of tropical flowers and the sea. Other times I can see in it the energy of native ceremonial dances. And there is also the midwestern weather, the distinct and often intense change of seasons. We are energetic beings and we are engaged in a great dance, even when we are still. The heart beats, the lungs fill, you look outside or into a painting, and something moves, calling for a response.
