We Came In Peace

"We Came In Peace" is a tribute to vintage comic books, old science-fiction and the space race done in oil paint on an oak wood panel. This original scene is an astronaut having landed on an alien world remarking they had come with peaceful intentions. The quote itself is a truncated version of one on a plaque placed on the moon. This astronaut's thought not being completed invites the audience to wonder what happens next. A background layer of oil paint shaded with Yellow Ochre simulates oxidized, aging newsprint then the painting is done with glazed layers of Cerulean Blue, Magenta Hue, Lemon Yellow and Lamp Black paint as my version of four-color CMYK printing. I wanted to simulate the primitive printing ability of the era and sponged on layers of translucent, thinned paint deliberately done with "errors" in the process like over-printing, registration failures resulting in colors not aligning, and spotty inking allowing colors to be seen through (even the black).
