Grafted In

The Shoecrew

"Grafted In" is a work of art by family and about family. It depicts two recent transformational events in our own family, when we welcomed a Russian exchange student and five siblings from Africa into our home. Layered upon a wood foundation, the piece represents a unique family tree, with the 3-D images of our 10 children's faces peering out from the trunk. The tree is an African Boabab, commonly known as the Tree of Life. Our aim is to engage viewers with the story of our own blended international and multi-ethnic family, thereby encouraging reflection on the open "borders" that can reconstitute any family. There are many forces at work in our culture to destroy families, but we've found the Word and Spirit of the Lord are all about building them. We also hope to inspire others, as we've been inspired, by some relevant symbolic words from Ezekiel 17. Are there children in need that might be grafted in with your family? Why not act with compassion to welcome them home?

About The Shoecrew

The "Shoecrew" is a family team consisting of husband/father Kevin Shoemaker and wife/mother Beth Ann Shoemaker. Both have enjoyed art as a hobby since childhood, and have painted many theater sets together. They also value cultivating a love for the arts in their children, so their 10 kids have helped in various capacities as volunteers on this project.
