2014, 5 - Object/Body Language Series

Colleen Garibaldi's avatar Colleen Garibaldi

Exploring, revealing, responding, the process of making giving rise to awareness. Using parts of the body as my tool for depicting phrases, thoughts, states of being, reactions; bringing to the surface that which is going on inside. Literally translating this metaphoric act, engaging with the picture plane, looking at boundaries or perhaps simply creating surface pattern. Fundamentally tweaking the prevalence of using the body as object, as decoration - a conceit demonstrated time and time again historically and in all aspects of our culture. My work doing so quite literally, often using limbs to form a decorative pattern, which raises the question of narrative, questioning if representation be used abstractly – and successfully? Plumb the depths of human existence or stay on the surface and simply delight in beauty. Both?
