My Puffy Shag Rug

Domestic spaces and objects have an embedded history that can connect a person to their past. They can highlight a specific event, or can unleash an array of memories. An iconic component of my childhood was a carpet in my parent’s basements. I would get lost in the bright colors of the red, yellow, and brown diamond motif. The directional quality of the pattern, coupled with the tactile nature of the shag rug would occupy my attention for hours. Every act of play was structured around this one significant element in my basement. For ArtPrize, I plan to develop a rug room installation. This space will be covered almost completely by rugs. The photograph included for the submission depicts the tapestry rug measuring 10' x 10' that will cover the floor space of the installation. The tapestry rugs will continue and cover four adjoining walls which will measure 8' x 10" each. There will be a small door frame for entry. The viewer will be invited to engage the rug space through the act of play.
