A Betrayal of Home

Security, innocence, and trust are considered to be inherent and essential privileges of childhood. Deeply intertwined, the betrayal of even one of these fragile conditions can easily initiate a domino chain of collapse shattering the confidence and future emotional well-being of an affected child. Regrettably, what should be the protection of a loving home is oftentimes the origin of this destructive force. Survival of such a traumatic childhood event leaves behind an indelible mark and for many, this trauma cannot be overcome. In this work, my focus is on the hope of renewal and growth of self that sometimes offers salvation for those traumatized by such a betrayal. This is a celebration of those who have been able to grow from or to move past the traumas suffered in childhood as well as a reminder that not all are so fortunate to put such events behind them.
