Eddie's Here

When I was 19, I walked into a restaurant in downtown Grand Rapids and heard Eddie Russ playing on a baby grand piano. I was mesmerized by the music and asked if I could study with him. For the next two years I studied with Eddie through private lessons & being in a jazz combo at GVSU. Learning also meant listening, and I did so every chance I could get. His band played at the Biermeister bar on Wealthy and I was often there with other young jazz students, soaking in his amazing gifts on the keys. Eddie played jazz standards but also wrote funky tunes that were infectious, toe-tapping, and cooool. After college, I moved away for 20 years. Upon my return, I knew Eddie had already crossed the jazz bridge to wherever musicians go and that we had lost a soft spoken, down to earth, musician-teacher-friend. This song is dedicated to Eddie Russ. Unlike some compositions I've worked on for weeks or months, this one just 'came out' in one sitting, while thinking of Eddie. Recorded at River City Studios: Laurie Sears [sax], Paul Brewer [tbone], myself [piano], Warren Jones [bass], Scott Veenstra [drums].
