The Chain of Life is a monumental wood carving created as a symbol of the human ability to connect, endure and triumph. Completed over a period of eight years with more than 3,000 hours of labor, the Chain is 487.5 feet long with 1993 links carved by hand from a single plank of wood without any joints. The artist, Markley Noel, is a master cabinet maker and wood carver. Conceived as a way to form an enduring legacy in a medium he knew well, the Chain became a symbol of human desire, perseverance, completion and fulfillment. It represents the connections formed over a lifetime---the links among individuals that form the Chain of Life.
