Benevolence is an original jazz composition by Dr. Paul Brewer. It is a through-composed work arranged on this recording for the 16-piece Grand Rapids Jazz Orchestra (GRJO). Benevolence is a poignant and gentle bossa nova, but it includes a section of powerful and impassioned scoring for the whole band that dramatically broadens the emotional scope of the piece in a musical narrative evocative of the memories so many of us carry recalling important and impassioned life experiences of youth (this section begins at the 6:45 mark). Benevolence features superb soloists on tenor sax (Greg Marsden), trombone (Paul Brewer), piano (Steve Talaga), and flugelhorn (Chris Lawrence). Benevolence also features colorful wind instrument scoring for flutes, clarinets, bass clarinet, and various saxophone and brass instrument combinations which include trumpets, flugelhorns, trombones and muted brass colors in combination with the saxophones, flutes, and clarinets. The voice of Dr. Robin Connell is also featured as she sings the melody along with flugelhorn and alto saxophone.
