Heart Strings

Heart Strings is a sculpture that repurposes 2 old cellos and 2 small sized violins. The instruments have gained arms and legs and are posed as if they were playing and creating their own music. The question I am exploring in this sculpture is: how does Art come about; is it the artist, is it the medium, or is it both? I believe the answer is 'Both/And' not 'Either/Or. The musician without the instrument is nothing. The instrument without the musician is empty. But put the musician and the instrument together with the creative spirit and something amazing happens. This is a trinity: Artist, medium, and creative spirit, Both/And. Now something awesome can happen. The limbs are made of plaster gauze bandages. Several of my students sat as the models for these limbs. Other students from Hudsonville Christian Middle School assisted in the technical work of creating the limbs under my supervision and guidance. I am in the process of putting the sculptures together such that they will stand on their own; therefore the sculptures are still a work in progress. I am planning to have the sculpture grouping finished by midsummer and hope to update photos as the work progresses.
