As an artist growing up in Asia, internal structures of things that invoke the presence of Yin and Yang interested me greatly. Some years back, I found these opposing cosmological forces in the folds of shapes I create using the ancient Asian art of origami paper folding. For the painting “Polka Dot Iris III” I interpret the unfolded structure of the Iris Flower Fold origami shape in terms of Yin and Yang. I use color and texture along with well-defined shapes and planes to push and pull the surface creating an illusion of a sculpted relief. By including varying sizes and colors of polka dots I also give the artwork a whimsical presence.
