The Quest: The Call, Apotheosis, Initiation

"The Quest" -- The oil paintings in this series, funded by a 2014 Individual Artist Grant from the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, represent my interpretation of three stages in the Hero’s Journey, or monomyth, as described by Joseph Campbell. The first painting, a self-portrait entitled "The Call," depicts the moment the hero is called to begin the journey, and she appears hesitant and questioning. In "Apotheosis," the hero undergoes tremendous growth toward reaching a new, transformed self, represented by robust flowers emerging out of the darkness. In "Initiation," an adversary is met along the hero’s path. The figure depicted is based on the character Antoine Doinel in French director François Truffaut's film "Stolen Kisses." These original oil paintings are each available for purchase. Email rani@raniyoung.com or call 312-863-1375 for more information. Prints are available online: www.saatchiart.com/raniyoung. Notecards of "Apotheosis" are for sale during ArtPrize.
