Shadow Dance

This intimate landscape was taken at Death Valley National Park in December 2013 as part of my five year National Parks Road Trip (2010-2015) in preparation for the National Park Foundation’s Centennial Celebration in 2016. The Eureka Dunes at 700 feet, are the highest dunes in California and arguably North America. Located in a remote area of the park, they’re in pristine condition, lacking the footprints that make the more popular Mesquite Dunes nearly impossible to shoot. This monochrome landscape comprises the entire zonal range from perfect black to perfect white. In this image, rivers of shadow dance with gentle folds and sensual curvatures of the dune. Sharply focused lines in the cornice accentuate the deep shadows and highlights. Sand and sky blend until one is indistinguishable from the other.
