Markets are vibrant spaces; full of color and life. They stand the test of time as the crossroads of people, goods and commerce. Markets are a lifeline in all civilizations. I have visited Ecuador on two occasions. The uniqueness of Ecuador's indigenous markets is always a sight to behold. The markets populate the city plazas. The vendors live close to the land and are often the same people who are responsible for growing and producing the wares. The goods emanate from the country's lush rainforests and volcanic landscapes, usually without technological intervention. The sights, sounds and smells of markets that I came across in my visits to Ecuador are not only a means of commercial exchange but a way to interact with these generous, humble, hard-working and patient people. The experience is a kaleidoscope of colorful sights as one peruses the displays of flowers, fruits, vegetables, textiles and handicrafts. The sights are often accompanied by a cacophony of children playing and people laughing. It is my hope that this painting reveals the understated beauty of the Ecuadorian culture and its attachment to the universal global experience.
