Towards the final light

Joseph, nearly 100 years old stands with his work companion as he looks towards the heavens. He was my friend that I have drawn since age 10. He taught me much of life, earth, faith, and tenacity. He made everything he ever needed, ploughed with horse. His survival counted on nature, animals, and work. In isolated area of Appalachia there still is a few people who hold on to their time honored traditions. Their is a pride in being self sufficient. This is a place where wisdom and innocence collide, where hard work and a peaceful heart rely on each other. What have we in this complex age, to learn from this simple life? Do we miss the richness of having a hand on every essence of our survival? Is there a sensitivity and connection in the ways of old that we need? Hopefully I can draw you into this pioneer world for a while and your heart can see what Joey's & Aunt Emily souls has to share. Hopefully the greatest detail you see and feel is emotion, that will have you discover some of a new person and some of yourself. Capturing the "Soul" of a character is among the most difficult, I have complicated this with the use of negative space ( Leaving the out much information), leaving it critical to master the character with what is shown. With Aunt Emily (age 103) I have shown you part of the beginning process it takes to create such pieces. Months and sometimes years of studies are created to help find the perfect storyline, position, and medium to capture the utmost of the soul. I will also be working on studies of beginnings of paintings at the site.
