Empty Nest

This painting symbolizes how we all feel - a bit worn and abandoned when our children leave our nest. It is an empty house with plenty of room but nobody there to fill it. I placed the empty birdhouse near the pear tree to show the fruits of all our labors are paying off. The pears are bountiful, beautiful and full of promise, even the ones with flaws. This is how nature intended life to go on. We must too. This oil painting took me about six months to paint. My photo realistic style is painstakingly slow and I love every minute of it. I enjoy making my paintings look as 3-D as possible with depth beyond my reference photos. The natural light is critical to this piece. It brightens up the background, represented by circles of paint and also plays off the leaves and the droplets of water. I push depth of my painting by the use of color and fine detail vs. fuzzy as it recedes. It makes you step closer to see all the leaves, the chipping paint and the skin of the pears.
