Dining With 'Big Daddy Hum' (& Mum)

Fred Cogelow's avatar Fred Cogelow

Homer, certainly one of the nation's mellowest individuals, had long appealed to me as a subject. Planned a composition of "Big Daddy Hum," as i call him, with a draft horse, but the latter's stature was insufficiently impressive with Hum in the picture. Adjourned following a morning shoot to the Pat and Hum abode, where "Hum" was caught at peace with his vegetables. The balance of the scene is mostly invented, especially "mum" (included mostly for the rhyme), who was the composite of 3 ladies. A fondness for ambiguity lead to incorporation of an unusual number of of symbols and symbolic juxtapositions designed to leave the option of competing narratives. //Bleaching, tinting and staining represents a rather recent development in work, having been for the most part a "natural finish" purist. //Mezzo-relief demands the fullest exploitation of the available depth, the utilization of which must be carefully orchestrated; .01" often constituting a crucial variance.
