powerless

Jess Bergman Tank is a Minneapolis, MN based artist focused on issues of identity and how our experiences, privileges, oppressions, and culture shape us and the way we move through the world. She has Bachelors degrees in Studio Arts and Art History from the University of Minnesota. Jess values her experiences traveling and has spent time cycle touring and living abroad in Ireland. She runs a teen center where she is lucky enough to work with teens from many different backgrounds. The piece "powerless" reflects on the struggles Jess experienced in counseling a young woman who is faced with an arranged marriage she wants no part of. Jess asks how we can move forward with pride when we are trading our daughters as objects to be purchased and sold? In what ways can we encourage a young woman to make a choice of respect and love for herself when to her it simultaneously represents hurting and betraying her family? Why would anyone put a young girl in this position in the first place?
