Jimmy Carter

This piece, composed completely of peanut shells, brings to life childhood memories of the first president I can recall -- Jimmy Carter. As an elementary school student I studied his life as our president, as well as his personal life as a peanut farmer. He seemed to infiltrate every aspect of everyone’s lives back then, including serving as the nightly topic of our dinnertime discussions. Thirty-some years on I remain intrigued by the man who was my ‘first’ president, and proud of the leader who continues to be an influential political presence. Therefore, I decided to honor Mr. Carter’s legacy with a portrait. To this end, I concluded that it would be composed entirely of peanut shells – a medium that combines the colors of my recollections with the products of his life. *** As a side note, I would like to thank Orin Mutschler, Kitchen Manager at the Texas Roadhouse in Fruitport, Michigan for kindly contributing the peanuts used in this work!
