The Fisherman's Sunrise

John Jansen's avatar John Jansen

This composition is written for guitar and viola. I was invited to write this piece for a special event put on for the Friends of the Barbara and George Gordon Gallery. It was premiered in May of 2013 at the gallery, which is a permanent home for the works of Mathias J. Alten: an American painter who lived in Michigan for much of his life. In the early 1900s, Alten made a trip to Spain and did a series of paintings there. This piece is based on a group of paintings that depict fisher folk along the shoreline. Of inspiration for the writing of this piece was both the culture of the fisher folk, as well as Alten’s rich color palette. Images of boats, sails, rolling ocean waves, and the beach all flow through the music in this piece.
