I love to paint birds but always try to paint them at their actual size so that they feel as if they have just lighted on the painting and may leave at any moment-free. I have never painted a bird in a cage. I was inspired by the incredible walls in Leo's Studio from the King's Speech. I had to pause the movie while I was watching it to look at the beautiful set. It was almost distracting to me even though the movie is one of my favorites. My dilemma was how to paint a large painting with such a small subject matter as the focal point. The gilded frame came to mind and I think that it works. -Much better a gilded frame than a gilded cage.
