Identity/Identification

Identity/Identification is a gridded quilt of Rol Único Nacional (RUN) Numbers, identification numbers assigned to Chilean residents by the government. A work in progress, Identity/Identification in its finished state will present all 27,153 RUNs of political prisoners who were tortured, disappeared or executed under the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990). Hand sewn with human hair, each RUN points to the intimate physicality of the body. Simultaneously, the stark numbers, isolated from their owners’ faces and names, recall the impersonal, numeric sequencing of holocaustal suffering. It is from this context of state-enforced terror that Identity/Identification highlights the ironic schism of a victim’s identification from their identity.
