Born on an Island

Anne Marie Church, Mary Scanlan

Born on an Island Composer: Jack N. Kimmell, b. 1925 Poetry: Adrian Swets, Grand Rapids (d) Soprano, Anne Marie Church “Born on an Island” (voice and piano) was commissioned by and written for soprano Anne Marie Church in 2011. As the founder of “American Art Song Today—ALIVE!” she has a career long history as an advocate for American classical song and has premiered numerous new pieces for the American art song repertoire. “Born on an Island” is a beautifully melodic setting for a richly worded poem that tells of a philosophical coming of age. The poem is so relevant that there are also plans to turn it into a children’s book, yet it speaks to all ages. The song was premiered at the Grand Rapids Art Museum on March 3, 2013. Ms. Church, Mr. Kimmell and Mr. Swets, are/were Grand Rapids residents. The attached recording features Ms. Church with Dr. Mary Scanlan, piano, also a Grand Rapids resident.
