I want to shed light on the issues of gender identity and playing with classic gender roles. I am photographing a dear friend of mine who is very androgynous. He identifies himself as a gay male, however he wears more feminine clothes and makeup. He is a makeup artist for Mac cosmetics, and truly does beautiful makeup as showcased in my work. We basically start off talking about different scenarios that we could create to portray different gender roles, such as the photograph of the rooftop of Josh as the basketball player. Most sports, including basketball, are a predominantly male sport. The colors I use, pinks and purples, along with the makeup and wardrobe, create a juxtaposition between this very male dominated sport but also making it very feminine at the same time. What I hope to get across with this work is to help people understand that we now live in a world that isn't in any way black and white, but various shades of gray.
