Sea Passage: Meta-mechanics

Edward Harkness's avatar Edward Harkness

This kinetic installation incorporates a half of a kayak frame, assorted boating gear, a cement mixer, and 36 large (2' x 2') glazed ceramic tiles. This work makes reference to a difficult boating experience in high winds and seas on Lake Michigan. During this six hour ordeal, I was gravely concerned about the mast crashing down, sails tearing, winches ripping out of the side decks, rudder breaking, tiller snapping, and that a moment's lapse in concentration would result in crew tossed overboard. The rigors of steering against the winds and waves for those long hours conjured up the art of Dadaist Jean Tinguely.
