Malphas and the Oil Curse

Leslie Bolyard's avatar Leslie Bolyard

This stone sculpture comments on the dependence of oil in the industrialized world and the torment brought on by this dependence. The figure in the center of the pool represents man with his open mouthed scream silenced by the flow of oil. On each side of the pool is an iconographic steel panel which depicts man’s transgressions in the crusade for world dominance of the earth's remaining oil supply. This imagery was inspired by those who foresaw that our unquenchable thirst for oil had put mankind on a collision course with damnation. The business of oil has spilled into the moral compass of nations clouding the future for humanity. ..................................“When people are called upon to commit violence on their neighbors, we know in our hearts that something is awfully wrong and dangerous – our religion has been corrupted.” -Matthias Chang
