The 5 Elements

This piece is a self-portrait. I didn’t quite realize this until it was finished. It is a story of my own personal transformation I’ve been experiencing over the last year, since my mother passed. My work is meant to depict time in transitional states, capturing the transformative moments that shape one’s journey. The five elements of water (winter), earth (spring), fire (summer), air (autumn) and spirit (consciousness) were just a starting point in the evolution of this piece. As I started to paint, it quickly started becoming something I didn’t envision. It was a dance between what I thought it should be and what it really was. It became a reflection of my personal state. It has been winter in my life, an internally still, quiet, reflective year of going within, a time of inner metamorphosis, readying for the sprouts of spring, a new beginning, a new vision of myself. My mother is a force in my life, guiding me to spring. This piece is dedicated to her.
