Pretty Face

Kevin O'Rourke's 2012 Art Prize entry is named “Pretty Face.” Composed of three distinct colors, this large 8’ x 12’ linoleum block print is an especially ambitious undertaking. Made up of 4 separate panels, the final piece is completely hand carved and hand printed. The individual blocks are then printed in three separate installments. The bold, three-color scheme draws the viewer in from a distance. “Pretty Face” is a unique mixture of organic and stylized typography. The composition speaks to vanity and self importance. The lyrics are not connected to the subject, but are meant to compete with each other in the composition. The stare of a very powerful and strong-willed subject constructed from a primal, rock and roll song that makes no apologies to the viewer. The size of the piece also wields power over the viewer, enabling the viewer to immerse themselves in it from a distance.
