FAMILY PORTRAIT My personal definition of family is what society has labeled as an “alternative” style of family. I am in a same sex relationship and my partner and I have been committed to each other for 12 years. Two years ago we decided to adopt a young dog from an animal shelter, and as anyone who has a dog knows, she has become a member of our “family”. I am very aware that this description does not fit the traditional definition of family and I hope that the image perpetuates the conversation happening currently about the inequalities applied to same sex partnerships and alternative family structures. I am currently executing this life size family portrait in the traditional time honored mediums of charcoal, acrylic and oil. This presentation will elevate this particular definition of family while simultaneously addressing the humorous aspects of family portraiture, and the history of portraiture in fine art.
