How It Will Be Told Soweto State of Mind

Soweto (South West Township) is one of South Africa biggest Townships-(Government plotted land for non-whites in South Africa). The townships that were created during the Apartheid era of South Africa, were to be remembered as a scar, evidence of the ruin of our inhumanity. Townships were and are viewed as the vessels of crime, poverty, neglect, and disease, not just in South Africa but in the shanty towns and "squatta camps" of the world. Something to eradicate or to ignore, by Governments and visitors, who do not know what to do with such a problem of poverty. Yet, despite more than 15 years since the Apartheid, Soweto still stands. The people there write their own story, forge their own history. The people of Soweto have not given up, they have not made the past their oppressor, Soweto now has schools, hospitals, roads, and neighborhoods. I often wonder how the story of Soweto will be told. Masks have always been a way to tell a story. I dedicate this mask, to the story of Soweto.
