“The Leopard” I’ve always had a fascination for the wildlife of this world. Recently the endangered status of some of the more prominent species, such as the big cats, has become evident. I’ve determined that through paintings I might, in a small way, help bring attention to the plight of some of these beautiful creatures. The Leopard is the smallest of the four big cats. At one time they ranged over most of southern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Today they are found only in small pockets in these areas. Leopards are loners, very stealthy hunters, can run at speeds upwards of 36 mph and are unequaled for their ability to climb trees even when carrying a carcass. Leopards are as comfortable in trees as they are on the ground so I determined to use their habit of dangling their feet as the means of portraying a sense of belonging. This is their world as well as ours.
