The Backbone of America

The foundation of America's economy is the American worker. Businesses that succeed do so primarily because of the talent, ingenuity, and attitude of their workforce. The inspiration for this project came to me in the early morning hours of a day last fall. Soon after that I began to carefully observe the vast diversity contained in the American workforce and how interdependent many of them are. After beginning the project, I decided to make a construction worker the focal point. In keeping with "The Backbone of America" theme of the piece, the photograph is of his back with the American flag blended into the image. His image will be displayed on a 24" by 32" piece of aluminum. The remainder of the piece will consist of 118 additional images of Americans at work. Each of these images will be printed on an 8” by 8” piece of aluminum. All of the individual photos that make up the piece will be interconnected to demonstrate how, when we all work together, we can accomplish great things.
