deshabille (paper chain)

The heart of my work is concerned with transformation, memory, and action. I position my work within the realm of installation art informed by social sculpture and relational aesthetics. I present two matrices, one being engaged with the physical transformation of material and space, the other being a mode of engagement with the making process. This project was sparked by the simple childhood memory of making paper chains to decorate an elementary classroom. That early, simple lesson in using a plain material to create and transform a space is also a common memory for many. What if this simple form moves beyond ornamenting a space and defines the space, changing the space through collective action. During the life of the piece you are invited to add to it a link, or maybe several. The piece will grow and change over time and in turn with continue to shape the space that it lives in. This growth is dependent upon another transformation, of viewer into participant.
