The Muteflutes

Hafiz was a Persian Sufi poet who lived in the 14th Century. I wouldn't consider myself a fan of poetry, but I have always been drawn to Hafiz's simple and familiar language, his honest rants. The first half of this song was adapted from his poem, “Your Mother and My Mother.” The second part grew from words shared with me once by my teacher, Bessheen Baker. Those words have always hung close to my heart, reminding me that no matter how alone I have felt from humanity, God, or myself, I have never been truly alone. The last section of this song is a bittersweet lament on the passing of time, the laying down of identity, and the memories we leave behind as we move forward in life.
