Grand Valley State University has a long tradition of supporting the arts. The University's Permanent Collection now numbers over 9,500 works of art, collected in support of its educational mission. The majority of these works are displayed throughout university facilities in Allendale and Grand Rapids to promote diversity and cultural understanding and enrich the lives of students, faculty, staff and the community. The collection features works in a wide range of media by faculty, students and alumni, many of Michigan's finest visual artists, art from around the world, and numerous works by renowned national and international artists, including Sam Gilliam, Olga and Alexander Florensky, and Cyril Lixenberg. The George and Barbara Gordon Gallery located at Richard M. DeVos Center houses an important collection of works of art created by one of West Michigan’s most significant painters, Mathias J. Alten (1871 – 1938) who is often referred to as the Dean of Michigan Painters.
